I recall the first time a customer assigned me to write a case study.
I was frightened.
Early in my career as a freelance writer, I didn't even know what one looked like. I had several inquiries. What on earth is a case study? "How long is it?" "What format is used?" "What am I charging?"
I was completely ignorant.
Obviously, I am more knowledgeable today. A lot more. In reality, each year I write hundreds of case studies for customers.
Case studies are now among the most engaging and profitable projects I manage. (I'm very thankful that customer hired me all those years ago!)
Don't worry if you're inexperienced with case studies. They are really fairly easy. A case study is just a fancy term for a success story - the account of a satisfied customer's experience with a product or service.
Recently, I've seen that an increasing number of businesses want case study writing but have difficulty locating qualified authors.
For you and me, this screams OPPORTUNITY.
And it gets better. Consider the subsequent:
1. Case studies are not difficult to write.
In style and structure, they resemble newsletter articles. Therefore, if you can compose one of them, you can write a case study.
2. Case studies are often brief
Typically between 400 and 800 words in length. After gaining some expertise, you will be able to complete one in less than a day.
3. The formats are standardized
Unlike advertisements and direct mail, you will not be required to come up with an innovative idea or catchy title. The format of a case study is fairly straightforward. All that is asked of you is to gather the data and compose a quality article.
4. Case study writers are in demand
Today, more firms than ever before are hurrying to get case studies done. I am unable to provide a precise number, but I believe that the need for case study authors has risen dramatically over the previous several years.
5. There is little competition
I cannot explain why so few copywriters target this market. Some may be unaware that it exists. Others may erroneously believe case studies to be tedious or complicated. Not true! Case study writing is a kind of narrative. It's enjoyable.
6. Case studies pay well
Unexpectedly well. No longer will you get the superstar rates offered to major league direct mail copywriters. However, the majority of consumers pay significantly for case study authoring. An skilled writer should not have excessive expectations of earning $100 per hour. I know several individuals who make far more than I do.
Currently, the market for case studies is expanding. Why not take advantage of these exciting and rewarding writing opportunities?
